Texas State Schools

Dear Sen. Shapiro,

As a 65-year-old parent of a 25-year-old disabled son (legally an incapacitated person),  a daily terror for me is what happens to my son when I die, or should I become too ill to care for him. Frankly, the horrors the Texas State School system are frightful and I cannot imagine what would happen to Matthew is he were subject to that.

The number of reported deaths at these schools should shock any rational person.

What I hear from Austin, as reported in the press, is that some legislature members seem to think this is simply a “training” issue, a “salary” issue, a “surveillance camera” issue.  This is – to me – a typical bureaucratic response and does not address the humanity of the residents.

We should never, ever forget that these are human beings, in my eyes no less than you or I, and worthy of our best efforts as citizens and responsible elected officials, to protect their safety, their right to have a life of respect, dignity, and care.  We are our brother’s (and sister’s) keepers.

The Texas State School system should be dismantled and replaced with community group homes. There should be complete funding for community-based group homes to include adequate staffing and access to community services such as health care. Professional oversight and inspections obviously should be integral to this process.

I ask you to search your heart and support this. It is the right thing to do. It is our duty as fellow human beings.

Sincerely,

Dave Thompson
